ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST III

*The Department of Environmental Protection’s Water Quality Standards and
EGAD (Environmental and Geographic Analysis Database)/Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) Support Unit of the Division of Environmental
Assessment has a current vacancy for an Environmental Specialist III in
Augusta.*

*BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:* This position in the Water Quality Standards and
EGAD/GIS Support Unit of the Division of Environmental Assessment is
responsible for:
• Providing day-to-day technical assistance to DEP staff in loading new and
historic data to EGAD to enable users to meet business and grant/funding
requirements
• Providing EGAD training and working with staff regarding sound principles
of data management, including Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC)
• Collaborating with State of Maine Office of Information Technology
programming staff to maintain/expand EGAD functionality
• Providing environmental/technical expertise to bureau staff in the
analysis and interpretation of attribute and spatial data stored in the
database
• Submitting program data stored in EGAD to US EPA target databases
• Working with non-DEP entities on EGAD related input and output issues
• Participating in regular division and EGAD meetings For questions

*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:* A six year combination of education and/or
experience in environmental, biological, physical science, or engineering
which includes two years of environmental experience. Qualifying education
must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework
from an accredited educational institution.

*Preference will be given to* candidates with the following skills and
experience:
• Experience/knowledge of relational database management concepts,
including an understanding of sound principles of data QA/QC and metadata
requirements
• Excellent command of standard Microsoft Office software, preferably
including MS Access
• Experience/training in environmental sampling, monitoring and testing
methods, practices and equipment
• Ability to direct complex technical projects
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing,
with database users with a wide range of computer skills
• Experience with advanced use of GIS software as well as GPS software and
hardware.

Level 1: 100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing): $363.77 biweekly
Level 2: 95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%): $345.58 biweekly
Level 3: 90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%): $327.39 biweekly
Level 4: 85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%): $309.20 biweekly
**The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be
