Dear Colleagues,

Do you know any middle or high schoolers who are interested in the
environment? If so, please spread the word! This is a fantastic opportunity
for youth to participate in on-going environmental research, explore ways
to make a difference, and learn about environmental careers!

The University of Maine at Machias’s signature environmental camp, the *Maine
Environmental Summer Session for Youth (MESSY) <http://machias.edu/messy>*,
will return for its fifth year in August. MESSY is a camp that promotes
awareness, builds knowledge, and stimulates active and creative approaches
to environmental stewardship and sustainability. And its lots of fun!

Space and scholarships are still available. Sign up now!

This year's theme is climate change. MESSY campers will engage in current
and continuing research projects with UMM faculty, learning how climate
change is impacting the environment and what can be done about it. They’ll
collect marine plankton to identify harmful algal blooms and warm-water
species, wade knee deep into nearby rivers and streams to assess endangered
salmon habitat, use computers and GPS units to technology to map habitats,
people and buildings that are vulnerable to storm flooding, design and
build windmills, and more. Participants will use state-of-the-art
laboratories, live in university dorms, and go on field trips to local
beaches, wetlands, lakes, and streams.

MESSY for grades 6–8 will run August 4–9 and the session for grades 9–12
will run August 11–16. Both sessions are overnight camps. Thanks to
generous support from businesses and foundations, scholarship funding is
available!

If you have questions about MESSY, please contact Jenny Robish at
