Hi everyone - we are pleased to announce a free training opportunity,
courtesy of USGS. The State has standardized on the National
Hydrography Dataset as our water body data for GIS. The NHD offers
several advantages above previous hydrography data Maine has used. With
that additional functionality however comes a different data model and
some tools that require some explanation. This is a great opportunity
to meet with David Anderson (NHD guru) and see the inner workings of the
NHD data model, and some of the tools that work with it in GIS.
The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Model and Applications
The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a seamless GIS data schema and
model for surface waters throughout the United States. The data includes
spatial features such as lakes, reservoirs, streams, rivers, estuary,
and oceans. The data also includes information on EPA reach codes,
Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD), Geographic Names Information, and the
capability of being expanded easily. The NHD conforms to the National
Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) standards and is being adopted by
many states developing their own State SDI.
David Anderson, USGS NHD partner support contact for the northeast
United States, will be holding a seminar/discussion about the NHD data
schema and the application of the NHD at the Maine DEP Response Training
Room on the Sept 8, 2012 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The time frame for the
discussions is open and may go beyond the scheduled time frame.
This seminar will concentrate on the following agenda (subject to
change by consensus):
1) What is the NHD and where to get NHD data?
2) State stewardship - a look at the model for maintenance of the
NHD
3) A detailed look at the model and schema of the NHD
4) Applications that have used the NHD
5) Tools that can be used with the NHD
6) Open discussion of applications attendees are developing for
water sciences and how the NHD could play a role
You must register ahead of time to attend.
Seating will be limited to 50 people, so please only sign up if you are
