Situated at the south end of the Phippsburg peninsula, Atkins Bay is a
large, scenic salt marsh. In addition to plants common to this natural
community, the salt marsh contains rare and uncommon species, making it an
ideal place for exploring. Some plants found here are not found anywhere
else in Maine! Students of graminoid (i.e. grass-like) plants will
especially enjoy this outing, since numerous grass and sedge species occur
here. Participants may also visit Popham Beach, a sand seashore and dune
system across from the marsh (entrance fees are charged for this state
park). Participants should bring a hand lens, metric ruler, botanical manual
of their choice, proper clothing (feet will get wet), a pair of binoculars,
and a bag lunch. Though this trip is geared towards those an intermediate or
advanced level of botanical knowledge, interested novices are also welcome.
Arthur Haines is considered by many to be the best plant botanist and field
taxonomist in New England. He and Thomas Vining wrote The Flora of Maine,
and now Arthur is under contract with the New England Wildflower Society to
write a flora of New England.
