Hi all...
I've been reading the thread on Loyal Fans and I remembered a story in our
local paper (Burlington, VT) from last Thursday, just before UVM's
quarterfinal series against RPI. It seems a freshman student was gambling
that UVM would make it to Lake Placid and was desperate for tickets but
couldn't afford the $90 for the tickets to see the games. She ended up
donating bone marrow from her spine for a medical study to get the $$'s to go
to Lake Placid. Whoa, talk about sacrificing your body for the team! Sounds
a bit extreme, but she said it was all worth it to see the Cats play in the
ECAC's. But I guess it's all in a day's work for Cat fans.
For regular season games, there's usually a line to buy the remaining
general admission tickets Friday morning (after the students with ticket
coupon books redeem their coupons for tickets on Thursdays) starting about
5:30am waiting until tix go on sale at 7:30am. This season the lines started
closer to 4am and for the cats final home stand, it started at midnight!
Amazing for regular season games. The student section of the general
admission seating fills up about 10 minutes after the doors open 1 hour before
game time, you usually have to stand in line about 30-45 minutes before the
doors open (and a back entrance at that!) to scramble for a seat. Was quite
a difference coming from Northeastern in the mid '80's (class of '88) when
seats were plentiful at Matthew's Arena even while they were winning 3
Beanpots in 5 years, the Hockey East Tourney and going to the NCAA's.
Of course, it is Burlington, VT now, and there isn't much of a hockey outlet
except for UVM unless you go to the High School games or travel the 1 1/2
hours to see the Habs. The non-student fan support is tremendous, with the
current wait for a season ticket now standing at about 12 years. It's
bizzare, parents are buying season tickets for their kids when they grow up!
Hockey Fever, catch it!! :-)
