I would imagine it's hard to say that "sideward or backward bat" statements
justify the hand pass rule for goalies since goalies are designed to catch the
puck.  It occurs in alot of games that a goalie will catch the puck and then
drop/flip it to a teammate without the goalie passing it with their stick to a
teammate.  This is neither a sideward nor a backward bat since the hand closes
around the puck.  But since the goalie is always in the defensive zone (hmmm,
except when leaving for an extra attacker) it's allowed. I guess there must be
other rules that specifically cover goalies in this instance.
