I am presently looking at Pound's interpretation of Fenollosa's translation of
Rihaku's (Li Po) poetry, which resulted in Cathay.  I know that Fenollosa
worked with two Japanese professors while at Tokyo Daigaku (Univ) , Mori and
Ariga, but I am trying to ascertain how they aided in his translation.  Yale's
Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library's Exhibition on Modernists and the
Orient (http://www.library.yale.edu/beinecke/orient/mod3.htm) shows a
manuscript in which these professors transliterated Li Po's poetry, it
appears, from Chinese to English, which, considering the similar syntax of the
languages, makes sense.  I would like to know whether or not there is any
evidence that these same professors performed a filtered translation (i.e.,
from Chinese to English through Japanese).  In addition, does anyone know if
Mori or Ariga ever wrote a translation of Li Po into Japanese?
