ANSWERS

*1. A Super Moon occurs when the moon is full and also ______________*
a. at or near perigee
A Super Moon is another name for the Perigean Full Moon, a moon that is
full when it is at or near perigee, its point of closest approach to
Earth.

*2. The full moon that occurs when the moon is at or near apogee is known
as a _______________*
b. Micro Moon
The Micro Moon doesn't generate as much press as the Super Moon because the
latter is 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the former.

*3. The names of the two people who will arise to replenish the human
population following Ragnarok are known as _________________.*
c. Lif and Lifthrasir
The Nordic mythological Universe will eventually perish in an event called
Ragnarok. However, it will be born anew and during that resurrection Lif
and Lifthrasir will arise from Yggdrasil to replenish the human race.

*4. In December 2004, the asteroid Adophis rated a _____ on the _________
scale, the highest number yet assigned to any outer space body.*
b. 4; Turin
Fortunately, the rating has been downgraded to a zero. A 4 rating
indicated a imminent impact probability of greater than 1% (In Adophis'
case, the probability was calculated at 2.7%). Now, astronomers have
assured us that Adophis will not strike Earth for at least the next 100
years.

*5. _________, the ___________ was the arch-nemesis of Adophis, the
Egyptian god of chaos.*
c. Ra; god of the Sun
Every night Ra would have to travel through the underworld and fend off
Adophis' attacks.

*6. On average. an asteroid the size of Adophis will strike Earth about
once every __________ years.*
d. 80.000
Although we won't have to worry about Adophis for the next century,
eventually an asteroid of comparable size will strike Earth. Such impacts
occur, on average, about once every 80.000 years.

*7. High tides that occur during a new or full moon are called __________
tides.*
a. spring

*Neap tides* are high tides that occur when the moon is at either the first
or last quarter phase.

*King tides *are high tides that occur when the new or full moon is at or
near perigee.

*Poseidon's tides* are high tides that occur when the new or full moon is
at or near perigee at the time when Earth is at or near perihelion, it
closest approach to the Sun (occurs in early January.)

*8. The Suez Canal connects which two bodies of water? (Ok, not exactly an
astronomy or mythology question.)*
a. Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea

*9. The Winter Triangle consists of the stars ___________________.*
b. Betelgeuse, Sirius and Procyon
Betelgeuse is a star in Orion.
Sirius is a star in Canis Major.
Procyon is a star in Canis Minor.

*10. The moon can appear to draw near or even occult four bright stars.
Which ONE of the following is not one of those stars?*
c. Capella

The moon can appear to draw close to or occult:

   - Aldebaran (Taurus the Bull)
   - Antares (Scorpius the Scorpion)
   - Regulus (Leo the Lion)
   - Spica (Virgo the Maiden)
