==============================================================================
[Note: this is game one of a saturday-sunday series]

This was a VERY VERY exciting, entertaining game. Wisconsin came out
flying, and got two goals early in the first period. Northern came back
to tie it, and Wisconsin got two more. On three of four consecutive
4-on-4 sequences, Wisconsin took a penalty to make it a 4-on-3 Northern
Power Play.

In the second period, the Badgers went up 6-2, on goals by Zent and
Moore. Northen came back with 16 seconds left in the period, to make it
6-3.

Twenty-nine seconds into the third period, Northern got another one, to
make it 6-4.

With 2:26 remaining, trailing 6-4, Northern pulled their goalie. This
gave them a 5-4 man advantage, as both teams had a man in the box on
matching minors. Wisconsin held off the Northern attack, but did not
get any real play in the northen end, nor a chance at the empty net.

At 18:29, there was a faceoff to Wisconsin goalie Duance Derksen's
left. Northern asked for Maco Balkovec's stick to be measured, and it
was found to illegal. This gave Northern a 5-3 (and then 6-4) advantage
with the empty net. It also allowed Wisconsin to ice the puck, and
shoot for the empty net. After one long shot rolloed just wide, Plante
put the puck away with 4 seconds remaining.

Northern Michigan seemed to loose their cool in the second period, and
they did not have very good coverage in front of their net. Saurdiff
gave up lots of rebounds, and the defense did not clear them away very
well. They also failed on several 4-on-3 powerplays.

Wisconsin played very well, and did not rest even with a 6-2 lead,
except for the goal at the end of the second period, when they just
melted. Duane Derksen was extremely good in goal.

Referee Greg Shepard called an odd game. He called lots and lots of
matching minors, which was probably reasonable, given that the teams
were really hitting each other, and there was a lot of matching
roughing. He also called some really strange calls, both ways, that
seemed very inconsistant. Both teams were guilty of some cheap shots.

For the most part, the action was up and down the ice, and very
exciting.

Seven Badgers scored, which has been a problem for them all season.
Northern Michigan coach Rick Comely broke up the line of Hiller,
Beattie, and Drake. His idea was to give some more scoring punch to his
second line. After the first period, he put the line back together.
