Dear Colleagues,

Happy New Year to all, and apologies if you've gotten this notice more
than once!

I'm writing to let you know that registration is open for the upcoming
Municipal Applications of GIS course offered by UMaine at Machias and
University of Southern Maine for either undergraduate or graduate
credit. The course begins on January 19th.

To enroll in the undergraduate section, register through UMM for GIS
301 - Special Topics in Geographic Information Systems (GIS); Topic:
Municipal Applications of GIS [0010-LEC(9785)]. Visit this site for
information on how to register for the undergraduate section through
UMM: http://machias.edu/mainestreet_register.html.

To enroll in the graduate section, register through USM for CPD 627 -
GIS for Municipal Applications [0001-LEC(13031)]. Visit this site for
information on how to register for the graduate section through USM:
http://usm.maine.edu/non-degree/

Students enrolling in the course must have already taken an
introductory GIS course or have permission of the instructor (that's
me).

The course is in a hybrid format with five Saturday laboratory
sessions offered in Machias or Portland, whichever is most convenient
for students regardless of which institution registered them.

We will provide a one-year student license for ArcGIS 10. Students
must own or have access to a computer that meets the minimum system
requirements for ArcGIS 10:
http://resources.arcgis.com/content/arcgisdesktop/10.0/arcgis-desktop-system-requirements.
Alternatively, GIS labs on both campuses are available for use by
students in the course, if they don't have their own computers capable
of running the software.

More details are below. Please let me know if you have any lingering questions.

Cheers!
Tora

Course Description: This hands-on course provides the basic skills
needed to use geographic information systems software, data and
analysis to manage municipal land records, support decision-making in
local government, and create zoning maps. Students will primarily use
ArcGIS software, the industry standard, but we'll also explore low-
and no-cost GIS software appropriate for municipal applications. The
course is online with five required all-day laboratory sessions
throughout the semester. The class will include streaming lectures,
hands-on lab exercises and real-world assignments and projects.
Students must have a computer that meets or exceeds the system
requirements for ArcGIS software and has a broadband internet
connection, or they must do required exercises or assignments in the
laboratory. A one-year student software license is provided.

Instructor: Tora Johnson ([log in to unmask]); Lab Instructor at UMM:
Tora Johnson; Lab Instructor at USM: Yuseung Kim ([log in to unmask]).
