Providence hockey defeated at unh, 4-2

DURHAM, N.H. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated at the
University of New Hampshire, 4-2, on Sunday, February 10 at UNH's Whittemore
Center in a HOCKEY EAST league contest.
New Hampshire opened the scoring with two tallies in the first period. The
Wildcats' Colin Hemingway scored the game's first goal, beating PC junior
goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) with a quick wrist shot. UNH
senior Darren Haydar increased the home team's lead to 2-0 at the 14:12 mark
of the period when Haydar knocked a loose puck past Schaefer.
The Friars got on the scoreboard in the second period when senior forward
Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) scored his 15th goal of the season. Fregoe's
goal pulled the Friars to within one goal at 2-1 when he converted junior
Jon DiSalvatore's (South Windsor, Conn.) feed from behind the UNH goal. The
Wildcats increased their lead to 3-1 at the 11:03 mark of the period when
Patrick Foley fired a shot from the high slot that snuck in the goal off the
back post.
At the start of the third period Providence pulled back to within one goal
when freshman defenseman Jeff Mason (Easthampton, Mass.) fired a one-timer
from the point for his first collegiate goal. Freshamn forward David
Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.) won the faceoff in the UNH zone to sophomore
rightwing Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.). Goodwin dropped the puck to
Mason, who fired the shot from the point, beating a screaned UNH goaltender
Matt Carney. UNH regained its two-goal lead 21 seconds later, though, as the
Wildcats' Jim Abbott skated in on Schaefer with Mason and defensive partner
Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) pulling at his jersey, and flipped a shot over
Schaefer's shoulder for the score. Darren Haydar added an empty-net goal
with 1:04 remaining.
Schaefer made 34 saves in the loss while Carney recorded 21 saves for UNH.
The Friars return to action next weekend when they host the University of
Maine for two games on Friday and Saturday, February 15 and 16. Game time is
7:00 p.m. for both games at PC's Schneider Arena.
