Hello MEEOA members,
I am forwarding this important email from Maureen Hoyler, president of COE. This is good news, even though it might not appear to be at first glance. This budget is far from completion, so please consider again inviting your elected federal representatives to see the wonderful work you are all doing across our state this summer and fall.
Best,
Terry

Today, COE learned that the Federal TRIO Programs were level funded in the FY 2024 (Program Year 2024-25) Appropriations bill reported out of the House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services (LHHS). The bill is expected to be acted on by the full House Appropriations Committee by the end of next week.

Level funding is a tremendous victory for organized TRIO in a bill that cuts funding for the Department of Education by 28% -- and that eliminates programs such as Federal Work Study and the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG). The bill maintains the maximum Pell Grant award of $6,335.

Before the TRIO number is finalized a number of steps must take place: the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, the Senate full Appropriations Committee and the full Senate must act. The House Appropriations Committee and full House must vote on their final numbers. The House and Senate must reconcile the differences between their two bills and the President must sign the Appropriations bill into law.

It is only your advocacy that protected TRIO to this point. Please continue to invite your Members of Congress to visit your program and meet your students and families.

My sincere thanks.

Maureen Hoyler

President

Council for Opportunity in Education
