What I meant to indicate:
 
There may be times when a team mighdeliberately take a face-off (one
situation where they do this is to get a line change, for example by
deliberately icing the puck) rather than face the consequences if they
don't.
 
  My grammar was bad; I didn't intend that "deliberate" be an adjective
of "face-off".  Probably none of these sentences will parse either, or
if so, not with the meaning I indended.
 
  Maybe someone else can explain why the "hand-pass in the defensive
zone" was added this year.  In the defensive zone, there may be times
when it would be more advantageous to have a stoppage of play than
to give up the puck and allow a score.  Prior to this year, a face-off
could have been forced by a hand pass; this year they had to find a
different way to do that dastardly deed.
