Good Morning All,

I hope you all have contacted your State Senator and representative regarding the GeoLibrary Budget proposed on A29 and A30 of the budget.
This was in the BDN this morning:
" Democrats are driving the bus on this budget. *If they pass one alone, they would have to do so by the end of March.* If minority Republicans stay attached to the deal, they should be able to win some notable concessions and a tax cut looks like it is one possibility <https://bangordailynews.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a629a44de37af801f63b7384a&id=5357b9fe78&e=9826b99e47>
.

If things go sideways in this moment of bipartisan cooperation and the D's decide to go alone we need to make sure the Board's oversight committees and the Appropriations committees know how important the budget is to you and the GeoLibrary and the State. In my opinion we should prepare Testimony and submit it to the three committees ASAP, that is what I am working on now.

A 2006 law limits growth in State and Local budget spending. The Governor's budget exceeds the ceiling by several hundred thousand dollars.

Our lawmakers are going to negotiate over this.

This was in the Bangor Daily News Briefs today:
"A leading budget negotiator, Rep. Sawin Millett, R-Waterford, said the cap will be a major element of his side's push on the document, although the former budget commissioner conceded that state spending plans often write out laws that are inconvenient. He also expected Democrats to question why his party was so focused on an old law. "That's a legitimate question, but when you write a law that survives this long, you have to assume that it's the existing law and work within it," Millett said." (This is not a full article in the 'paper' just part of an email blast I get.)

Stuff like this can blow up the current "Kum ba yah" moment between the D's and R's,

Don't wait to contact your legislators!!
*Do it today!!*

Good Evening Everyone,
I know that many, maybe everyone, has seen videos regarding lidar and how it is expanding our knowledge of past civilizations and man's activities that have been obscured by nature's advance after man has ceased to exist in the environment.

This video of the Amazon <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY82nZTxXQ4>ian
Rivers. reminded me of the importance of the GeoLibraries work. If we only read the US history books we would think that the Americas were largely unpopulated and unsophisticated prior to the European explorers.

It is a very unsophisticated view of the people and cultures in the Americas. Modern day tools such as lidar are proving that there was much more to native populations than we have been led to believe.

As we lobby our legislative leaders for the GeoLibrary resources so desperately needed, think about our contributions to historical knowledge.
Hopefully the data we collect now will survive our technological advances and tell the stories of what it was like to be in Maine today to our descendants and their descendants!

Call your Senator and Representative! They probably won't respond to your emails!

Act Now!!
