Just a note from Wil McDonough's column in today's Boston Globe:

>How many taxpayers in Maine were paying attention
>when the University of Georgia took its hits from the
>NCAA and walked away pleased? Those penalties
>came at no cost to the citizens of Georgia. Conversely,
>Maine has to pay $620,546 to the Kansas law firm it
>hired to investigate the problems with the Black Bears
>hockey program and to make adjustments in other
>programs.
>When the firm of Bond, Schoeneck and King was hired
i>n 1994 to conduct a full investigation, the potential bill
>was estimated at $100,000. The actual amount is more
>than the annual budget for the hockey program.
>Maine was hit by the NCAA and lost its appeal for
>reductions, reportedly because it would not fire hockey
>coach Shawn Walsh. Walsh was suspended by the
>university for a year and went to work for Maine hockey
>boosters, reportedly for $75,000. Meanwhile, the
>university tried to save hockey by setting up the football
>program to take some whacks even though it had nothing
>to do with hockey's problems.
>Walsh is still there after the athletic director and
>compliance officer were let go, and he will be coaching
>the hockey team this season even though his activities
>cost the university more than $620,000. There is
>something wrong with this scenario.
