At the risk of insulting your intelligence, and I assure you that is not the
intent, I'd suggest that you visit your local library and find the Children's
section.  Look therein for the Sports shelves and you SHOULD find some
excellent, fully-illustrated books that will give you the kind of info you're
looking for.  The same may very well hold true in the bookstores in your
area; tomes written for adults aren't geared for folks who don't know the
game already.  Just brazen it out, and tell the librarian or the store clerk
you're looking for something for your son/daughter/nephew/niece/grandchild to
introduce them to the game.  The selection should range from the
super-simplistic on up -- from the ridiculous to the sublime, as someone once
said.
