Not bad, Dave. :-) I was just thinking that there were probably a lot
of people who might not understand Ryan's use of "Mike and the
Madchuk". WFAN out of New York City, apparently the top sports radio
station in the US, has an afternoon show called "Mike and the Mad Dog"
with Mike Francesca (sp?) of CBS-TV fame and another guy. It's one of
those shows you either love or hate.

Anyway, I also wanted to comment on the fact that it was Ryan who
wrote this column. I won't dispute any of the things he stated as
fact (even though Gladchuk did dispute them), since I don't know. But,
Ryan is probably one of the Boston sports writers who I respect the least.
I've read enough of his columns, heard him on the radio and seen him
on WSBK-TV38's "SportsBeat" (the Boston version of "SportsWriters On
TV"). And to me, he is arrogant and believes he knows everything, and
he deliberately says and writes inflammatory things to get attention.

When Ryan covered the Celtics, his game stories were excellent, and he
is a good reporter. But more often than not, his columns have seemed
contrived and designed more for a reaction than to give a realistic
view of the situation. (Some would argue, that is the purpose of a
column such as this.) It's very similar to the garbage that Joe
Fitzgerald wrote about Maine and Shawn Walsh three months ago. In fact,
I often wonder if the two Boston papers (Ryan works for the Globe,
Fitzgerald for the Herald) are trying to outdo each other in coming up
with this stuff since they have been going head-to-head for readership
for many years.

I see that a columnist who I do respect, Mike Madden, wrote the second
article that Adam posted. Dan Shaughnessy is another writer who I would
say I do respect in the city. But I would have rather read an opinion
piece by Madden and a news story by Ryan.
