Comments: Somewhat of a humdrum evening. I felt that Western was
the better team for the first 20-25 minutes. They had more jump in
their stride and were beating the Michigan defensemen to the puck
on dump-ins far too often. I mentioned to my wife that the absence
of Rick Willis (game DQ vs Wisconsin) was more evident than I
expected. Willis is a 4th line winger, but a key figure on the UM
penalty kill. More importantly, he's a BIG hitter and -- like Cam
Stewart when he was here -- seems to be able to pull the team out
of a listless period with his physical play. And Michigan needed
such a lift in the first period. However, not more than a couple
of minutes after I was lamenting Willis' absence, Mike Knuble
scored a pair then Mike Legg netted a nice goal, doing most of the
work himself, and Michigan was suddenly up 4-1. Michigan outshot
Western 34-19 over the final two periods and skated to victory. Of
course, there was the customary array of tussles in the third
period, padding everyone's penalty minutes and significantly
delaying the post-game meal. (We could have been out of there 20
minutes sooner if shoving each other after the game wasn't such a fashion.)

For those who are willing to stay with me, I picked up a copy of
the official summary. (The above is simply my notes taken during
the game, as are almost all of my posts.) Here goes, with my
comments noted as -- text --.

 4:36 W Whitton (tripping) -- UM 0/1 --
14:07 W Brekke (cross-checking)
15:06 M Botterill 13 (Oliver,Knuble) ppg -- UM 1/2 --
15:47 M Luhning (interference)
17:07 W D'Arcy 3 (Brekke,Renfrew) ppg -- WMU 1/1 --
25:38 M Knuble 9 (Halko,Morrison)
26:07 W Maloney (tripping)
27:38 M Knuble 10 -- should be ppg, UM 2/3 --
29:16 W Cardwell (holding) -- UM 2/4 --
32:13 M Legg 5 (Stone,Federov)
40:00 W Innanen (cross-checking)
      M Halko (roughing)
41:40 M Sloan (interference) -- WMU 1/2 --
43:01 W bench (too many men) served by Zimmerman
43:20 M Stone (checking from behind) -- WMU 1/3 --
43:39 W Ward (slashing)
44:09 M Oliver 10 (Knuble,Morrison) ppg -- UM 3/5 --
-- At this point, Zimmerman is removed from the penalty
box. Admittedly, I haven't thoroughly read the rule book,
but my interpretation is that Ward's penalty created the
Michigan 4-on-3 power play, therefore he should come out
of the box, not Zimmerman. Western protested vehemently
to no avail. Later, Michigan did not convert on the :19
power play between Stone's return and Ward's return,
        leaving UM 3/6. --
44:50 M Hilton 6 (Sloan)
46:49 M Sloan (tripping) -- WMU 1/4 --
49:41 W Whitton (holding) -- UM 3/7 --
51:18 M Wiseman (high sticking) -- WMU 1/5 --
53:58 W Whitton (slashing) -- UM 3/8 --
56:17 W Cardwell (roughing)
      W Innanen (roughing)
      M Luhning (roughing)
      M Schock (roughing)
58:21 W Gallentine (misconduct) -- C-YA! --
59:20 M Stone (hooking) -- WMU 1/6 --
59:33 W Brown (roughing)
      W D'Arcy (roughing)
      W Mayers (roughing)
      W Whitton (roughing)
      W Whitton (roughing) -- not a typo, 2+2=4 --
      W Zimmerman (roughing)
      M Halko (roughing)
      M Hilton (roughing)
      M Madden (roughing)
      M Sloan (roughing)
60:00 W bench

Saves: WMU Renfrew (7-14-15--36,60:00)
       UM Shields (8-11-3--22,50:45)
           Loges (x-x-5--5,9:15)

Power Play: WMU 1 for 7, UM 3 for 7

Comments: Well, there are a couple of discrepancies. The obvious
one is that Loges came in with 9:15 gone, not 9:15 remaining.
(Al's losing out on 1:30 of shutout time...maybe this is how
Shields goals-against remains low. :-) The more complicated
problem is the power play situation. I'm assuming that Knuble will
be credited with a power play goal since the team is listed as 3
for 7. However, I have Michigan at 3/8 and Western at 1/6. *IF*
at the time of the Oliver goal, Ward is removed from the box rather
than Zimmerman, then the official box would be correct at 3/7 and
1/7. But I distinctly remember Zimmerman coming out and Brekke
(WMU captain) barking (or should that be bucking) his head off
about it. Either my keen sense of observation (ha!) has failed me
or the summary is incorrect. (And their still spelling FEDOROV
wrong. Poor Anton, he should has stuck with Fiodorov and corrected
everyone on the pronunciation.) Hmm...
