However, the last two years former BC defenseman Greg Brown (5-35--40
in 42 games in 1989-90, 9-34--43 in 1988-89) won Hockey East Player of
the Year and was a serious candidate for the Hobey. Last year he
placed second in the balloting, but Kip Miller's tremendous season
was enough to beat Brown out. It is difficult for good defensemen to
be recognized, you are correct. It would be nice if there was some
type of Norris Trophy like Kyle Aumell mentioned to me in mail.
Since someone asked for this, here are your Hobey winners since the
award began. I also have one of the books at home that lists all the
finalists.
1981 Neal Broten, Minnesota (17-54--71 in 36 games, 9th in nation)
1982 George McPhee, Bowling Green (28-52--80 in 40 games, 4th)
1983 Mark Fusco, Harvard (don't have)
1984 Tom Kurvers, Minnesota-Duluth (18-58--76 in 43, 7th)
1985 Bill Watson, Minnesota-Duluth (49-60--109 in 46, 1st)
1986 Scott Fusco, Harvard (24-44--68 in 31, 20th)
1987 Tony Hrkac, North Dakota (46-70--116 in 48, 1st)
1988 Robb Stauber, Minnesota (2.72, .913 in 44, 3rd)
1989 Lane MacDonald, Harvard (31-29--60 in 32, 18th)
1990 Kip Miller, Michigan State (don't have)
