Here are the lowest-seeded tournament champions and finalists for the four
"major" conferences (the MAAC tournament has only been around for two years,
and the CHA obviously for one):

ECAC -- Finalist: #8 Cornell, 1980
        Champion: #8 Cornell, 1980

Unlike the other conferences, the ECAC has had a lot of teams seeded
lower than fourth make the finals, and even win the whole tournament.
Five #7's have been finalists -- St. Lawrence (1964), Providence
        (1978), Princeton (1995), Providence (1981), and Princeton (1998),
with the last two of those winning the championship. Five #6's have
reached the finals -- Boston College (1968), Clarkson (1988), Vermont
(1989), Harvard (1996), and RPI (1995), with the Engineers winning the
tournament. And three #5's have made it -- Clarkson (1986), Cornell
(1992), and Boston College (1978), which won the tournament.

Hockey East -- Finalist: #6 Providence (1995), #6 Maine (1998)
        Champion: #4 Providence (1996), #4 Maine (2000)

CCHA -- Finalist: #7 Nebraska-Omaha (2000)
        Champion: #4 Lake Superior (1995)

WCHA -- Finalist: #7 Michigan Tech (1996)
        Champion: #3 Wisconsin (1983), #3 Northern Michigan (1992), #3 Minne-
                   sota (1993), #3 Denver (1999)

The WCHA appears to have begun seedings in 1972. Prior to 1982, there
was no championship game (except in 1977), and the two finalists simply
advanced to the NCAA's. In 1978, #5 Colorado College reached the final
round and went to the NCAA's.
