HOCKEY DEFEATS LEBANON VALLEY, 3-2

NEW BEDFORD, MA- Senior forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) scored the game-winning goal with six seconds left in the second period and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team held on for a 3-2 victory over visiting Lebanon Valley in a non-conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Friday evening.

Shore broke a 2-2 tie when his wrist shot went between sophomore goalie Rich Drazin’s (Wilmette, IL/Binghamton Senators) pads just prior to the expiration of time in the second period. Senior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) drew the only assist.

Shore’s goal capped a comeback by the Corsairs, who scored twice in the second period to take the lead after falling behind early. UMD freshman forward Paul Graham (Quincy, MA/Northern Cyclones) tied the score when he fired home the rebound of a shot by freshman forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) at 7:46 of the second period. Junior defenseman Chris Carpenter (Westford, MA/Berkshire School) also assisted.

Sophomore forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) put the Corsairs on the scoreboard when he flipped home the rebound of a shot by Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH./Valley Junior Warriors) at 13:35 of the first period. Freshman forward Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ/NJ Rockets) also drew an assist on

The Dutchmen had grabbed an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore forward Brad Surdam (Springfield, VA/Washington Nationals) put LVC on top when he flipped a rebound past UMD junior goalie Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) at 3:43 of the first period. Freshman forwards Matthew Becker (Olds, AB /North Country CC) and Nicholas Schultz (Lakewood, CA/Hampton Road Whalers) assisted. Schultz scored 58 seconds later to make it 2-0, with freshman forward Marcus Willhite (Torrance, CA) and sophomore forward Nick Averona (Malvern, PA/Wyoming Seminary) drawing the assists.

LVC pulled Drazin with 45 seconds left in the third period, but was unable to beat Dryjowicz-Burek, who stopped Becker from point-blank range in the waning moments.

“It was yet another in our series of low-scoring, close-checking games,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “I have to give our team credit. After getting down early, 2-0, we stayed the course, didn’t try to do things we shouldn’t do, cut the lead to 2-1, dominated the second period, and played a good defensive third period.”

The Corsairs out shot the Dutchmen, 29-24. Dryjowicz-Burek made 22 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Drazin made 26 saves for Lebanon Valley. UMass Dartmouth didn’t convert any of their four power play chances, while killing three of four LVC opportunities.

The Corsairs improved to 9-4-1 with the victory, while the Dutchmen dropped to 0-15-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Westfield State in an Eastern College Athletic Conference game Saturday, while Lebanon Valley will visit Nichols Saturday. “The Westfield game is a four point game, it’s an important game in the schedule,” said Rolli.
