Summary:
 
Union came back from a 6-3 deficit in the middle of the third to take
a 7-6 win over Colgate.  The Dutchmen tied the game with the goalie
pulled and under a minute left, then took the win on another goal with
23 seconds left.
 
Union came out strong right at the beginning, but the play became
sloppy pretty quickly.  Colgate took a 1-0 lead on a soft goal by
Fogarty.  His shot hit Gallant, but it trickled past him and into the
net.  Union tied it a few minutes later on a very nice 2-on-1 break.
Cory Holbrough carried the puck in with Chris Albert.  Holbrough held
it until the defenseman went down, and put the puck on the stick of
Albert who put it into the open net.  Colgate got a late power play
goal to take a 2-1 lead after 1.
 
Bruce Gardiner scored twice early in the second for Colgate to give
them a 3-goal lead.  The second was a pretty wraparound that beat
Gallant on his right.  Union got a few power play chances in the
middle of the period and scored twice, but also allowed Harder to
score on a shorthanded breakaway.
 
Fogarty scored his second of the game for Colgate to regain a 3-goal
lead at 10:32.  It looked like the Dutchmen's unbeaten streak would
end at 7.  Union got a power play at 11:50 and Jeff Jiampetti scored
to make it 6-4.  Jon Sicinski brought Union to within 1 at 14:58.  The
Dutchmen took a time out with 1:32 seconds left, and Gallant was
pulled for the extra skater about 15 seconds later.  The move paid off
when Russ Monteith's weak shot from the blue line found its way
through the crowd out in front and past Gates for the tying goal with
59 seconds left.  I expected Union to kill off the period and go to
work in overtime, but overtime wasn't needed.  After some pressure by
Colgate, Jiampetti and Holbrough broke the puck out.  Holbrough sent a
perfect pass to Jiampetti for the game-winner with 23 seconds
remaining.  The goal was Jiampetti's 3rd of the game - his first
career hat trick.  Even then, it wasn't over.  Colgate came down for
another shot at Gallant.  Union was called for a penalty with 4
seconds left giving Colgate a 6-4 skating advantage for a faceoff to
Gallant's right, but their quick shot went wide and Union came away
with an amazing win.
 
Although this is one of the most exciting finishes I've ever seen,
most of the game was not that great.  Both teams were pretty sloppy.
Union couldn't connect a pass at times.  Gallant wasn't as sharp as he
usually is.  And the refereeing was pretty poor.  Several obvious
mistakes were made by the officials, led by Pierre Belanger.  The
calls really went both ways, but they were still a factor in the game.
Belanger again seemed to be very arrogant about making sure everyone
knew he was in charge.
 
There was also a scary incident during the first period.  Someone on
the Union bench (trainer?) was hit in the face with a puck.  According
to the Times Union, the injury required stitches and there was a broken
bone.
 
It was a small crowd considering the streak this team has been on.
There were under 2000 people, but when Union made their comeback they
were about as loud as any Union crowd I've heard.  Colgate brought a
band, and they were pretty good, but they really have to learn to stop
playing when the puck is dropped.
 
As far as the stars of the game for the Dutchmen, the line of
Jiampetti, Albert, and Holbrough played an excellent game.  Jiampetti
had the hat trick, Holbrough had 3 assists, and Albert had Union's
first goal.  The Boyd-Simonton defensive pair got burned a few times,
giving up the shorthanded break for Colgate's 5th goal, and another
breakaway chance that was stopped by Gallant later in the 2nd.
Colgate got a great effort from Bruce Gardiner, who always seemed to
be involved in the play and picked up 2 goals and 2 assists.
 
The Dutchmen's unbeaten streak is now at 8 (6-0-2) and they have
reached .500 in the league (9-9-3).  Union is 12-9-4 overall.  Union
finishes the season tonight against Cornell.  Union is in 7th place, 2
points ahead of Cornell and one point behind Colgate.
