Union breaks a 6-game winless streak by defeating Colgate 4-1 tonight in
frigid Schenectady. The Cornell fans at Achilles on Friday night wouldn't
have recognized this Union team, as they played a much crisper and livelier
60 minutes than the night before.

Even though he made only 15 saves, Kris Mayotte was very solid in goal.
There were 3 point-blank shots that he stopped, including a mini 2-on-0
Colgate rush inside the Union zone. He made a couple of tough saves in
the opening few minutes that gave Union some life and set the tone for
the rest of the game. Barring the handful of quality scoring chances for
Colgate, Union's defense was outstanding. They did a good job of keeping
the shots on goal to a minimum, along with killing off 3 consecutive Colgate
power plays.

With Union ahead 2-0 in the 3rd, Colgate's P.J. Yedon scored on a rebound
during a Red Raider power play. Thirty seconds later, Bryan Campbell hit
Union captain Nathan Gillies on a home run pass from his own goal line.
Gillies got enough of the puck to keep Colgate goalie David Cann from
coming out to play it and flipped it past Cann for a 3-1 lead. Colgate tried
pulling Cann with less than 2 minutes to play, but Union's forechecking
didn't allow it. Cann eventually did leave for the extra skater, but
Gillies iced
the game with an empty-netter with 1.7 seconds left.

Union's win, combined with Dartmouth's 6-4 loss to Vermont, moves them
into a tie for 6th place with the Big Green, one point behind Clarkson. Union
travels to Hanover, NH and Burlington, VT next weekend.
