HOCKEY FALLS AT UMASS BOSTON, 3-2

BOSTON, MA – Freshman goaltender Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) stopped 38 shots to earn his first collegiate victory as the University of Massachusetts Boston men’s ice hockey team edged visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-2 tonight in a non-conference contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 6-7-2, while the Corsairs fall to 10-5-1.
Sophomore forward Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) took a feed from freshman forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) and freshman defenseman John Hubbard (Arlington, TX) and netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 4:05 of the first period to put UMass Boston on the board, but UMass Dartmouth tied the contest with just 1:21 left in the opening period when sophomore forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA) and junior blueliner Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA) found junior forward Aaron Blades (Chino, CA) for his first tally of the season to make it 1-1.
Hubbard set up sophomore forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) for the second period’s only goal and a 2-1 Beacons’ lead on Jacona’s third goal of the year coming at 17:22 on a four-on-four situation. Jacona combined with freshman forward Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, MI) to find freshman forward Chris Wyman (Bartlett, IL) for the eventual game-winner and his seventh marker of the campaign at the 4:54 mark of the third period for UMass Boston. Senior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI) fed junior defenseman Chris Carpenter (Westford, MA) for his first score of the season at 12:49 to pull the Corsairs to within 3-2, but that would be all the scoring for the rest of the night.
Junior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA) stopped 24 shots on the evening for UMass Dartmouth, which outshot the Beacons, 40-27.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Friday, January 23 when it hosts Salem State College in an ECAC East contest at 7:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Corsairs travel to Hookset, NH to take on Southern New Hampshire University on January 24 at 2:00 p.m.
