Subject: FW: Urgent! Action Needed-TRIO funding in jeopardy today!
Importance: High

Good morning again!
The House of Representatives is voting today to move $60M from TRIO to CTE. PLEASE call your representative in the US House right now! To make this easier, follow the direction and script in the message below. Remember to use your personal cell phone not your work phone.

We need to flood the switchboard! I have called Rep Pingree's office because I am in her district. District 2 folks should call Rep Poliquin's office. After calling, please pass this urgent alert onto your staff, students, friends and family.
Don't let Congress cut TRIO funding!

Thank you!

Jane

Importance: High

Hi Jane,
We have an urgent situation affecting TRIO funding NOW!
Late yesterday evening, despite strong opposition by Approp. Subcomm. Chairman and TRIO Camp Tom Cole, the House Rules Committee approved the "Lewis Amendment" that would take $60 million funding increase to TRIO and move it to CTE.
CTE programs are very popular in Congress; therefore it is CRITICAL that ALL TRIO supporters take the following steps:
It is urgent that you, your alumni, students, parents, and other supports CALL your House Representatives, particularly those who are Republican, and urge them to vote NO on the Jason Lewis CTE amendment. Doing so is simple.

1. Find your Representative's number at https://ziplook.house.gov/htbin/findrep?ZIP or call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and give the operator your zip code.

2. Tell the staff member who answers the phone: "My name is _____ and I am a resident of ______ and I want Representative _________________ to vote 'NO!' on the Jason Lewis CTE Amendment to H.R. 3354."

3. Get feedback from the aid/staff/ member on their commitment to vote NO.

4. Hang up and nudge three of your friends in TRIO to do the same thing.
Let me know once you receive this email. And do pass it on to others in the TRIO community!
Thank you,
Nicole

This is going to the TRIO community momentarily.
Dear Colleagues:
Most of you, I am sure, were pleased to receive a 2.5% increase in your TRIO grant for the 2017-18 program year. That increase was only possible because the House Appropriations Committee provided a $60 million increase for TRIO in its FY 2017 appropriations bill.

The House FY 2018 appropriations bill (HR 3354) also includes a $60 million increase for TRIO. HOWEVER, Representative Jason Lewis (R-MN-2), joined by Representatives Paul Mitchell (R-MI-10), Francis Rooney (R-FL-19), Drew Ferguson (R-GA-3), and Lloyd Smucker (R-PA-16) have filed an amendment that would eliminate the increase to TRIO and transfer the $60 million to career and technical education. This amendment could be voted on as early as Wednesday, September 6 when debate begins on the floor of the House of Representative.

It is urgent that you, your alumni, students, parents, and other supports CALL your House Representatives, particularly those who are Republican, and urge them to vote NO on the Jason Lewis CTE amendment. Doing so is simple.

5. Find your Representative's number at https://ziplook.house.gov/htbin/findrep?ZIP or call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and give the operator your zip code.

6. Tell the staff member who answers the phone: "My name is _____ and I am a resident of ______ and I want Representative _________________ to vote 'NO!' on the Jason Lewis CTE Amendment to H.R. 3354."

7. Hang up and nudge three of your friends in TRIO to do the same thing.

Together we will defeat this attempt to deprive low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities with enhanced opportunities to pursue postsecondary education.
Sincerely,
Maureen Hoyler, President
Council for Opportunity in Education
