Dear Pound-folks:

The deadline has been extended to January 19th for this year's Southwest Popular
Culture/American Culture Association Conference in Albuquerque. Anyone interested
in submitting proposals can browse the conference web-site at
<http://www2.h-net.msu.edu/~swpca>. I am looking for a few more proposals for the
following area.

Call for Papers: The Beat Generation and Counterculture Movements

The Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association
invites papers and panels examining all aspects of the Beat Generation and related
Counterculture Movements for its annual conference to be held March 7-10, 2001, at
the Sheraton Oldtown Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Possible Areas for consideration include, but are not limited to:

Beat Generation writers, in the broadest sense.
Influences on the Beat Generation, cultural, literary, political, religious, etc.
The Beats and Queer Theory.
The Beats and Gender.
Contrasting Movements, e.g. Beats vs. New York School.
The Beats and Modernism/Postmodernism.
Beat influences on Gen-X.
Media and the Beats, Gen-X.
Was the Beat Generation actually a "generation?"
Ginsberg's Death and Fame.

Topics to be presented on include Bob Kaufman, Bukowski and the LA Renaissance,
Patti Smith, and more. We're looking for untapped topics or new ways of seeing
what's thought to be tapped out.

Please send proposals (200 word abstract and one-page cv) by January 19, 2001 to
the Area Chair:
