Flipping through my dictionaries some pages further, I find another maybe
even more possible connotation:
(sha shen) cheng ren are gentlemen (cheng ren), killed for their conviction,
the country etc. - martyrs for a just cause. ('lay down one's life for a
cause of justice' says my Jingxuan ying-han cidian almost poetically...)
