My dear Stoner James,
all this discussion has become a HUGE mess.
First, words like “modernism” or “truth” have no
meaning outside academic brainwash. Second, Pound’s
greatness (or not) is no issue for people who have not
one hundred years in the least and no masterpiece in
his/her curriculum — we’ll be only speculating about
“I think”, or “he is” and “he is not”, childishly. If
people on lists don’t ever discuss Pound’s poetics, we
can’t simply assume: “Well, he has only politics,
then.” mostpeople don’t know what poetry is about.
Unhappily, poetry has become — Oh my God, Oh no, no —
elitistic. Why? Bad education, too much crap
everywhere, critics, curators, jornalists, etc.
Carelessness.
If people are so damm iggurunt that they
runaway from Pound’s poetry because of its
“allusiveness”, we can only say: “it’s a shame”, or
“I’m really sorry for you”, or yet “may you try it
another time”. If people drop things cause things are
difficult, let everybody with their everyday TV shows.
Let everything be written as Emerson’s exercises. Why
discussing this tiny little elitistic bore, poetry?
Pound is dead, Ovid has gone to Orcus, Homer to
Elysium, Chaucer is dede, Dante è morto, finito,
they’re so allusive, distant, we’re so sick & tired.
Let’s pretend we’re already dead too. As Pound
(Florent Chréstien, trd.) said “after death there
comes no other calamity”.
Remember: only if we’re so careless.
