PROVIDENCE HOCKEY TIES #10 MAINE, 3-3
PC junior forward Devin Rask tallies hat trick for Friars
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 3-3
overtime tie with 10th-ranked Maine on Saturday, February 16 at PC's
Schneider Arena. PC's Devin Rask scored all three goals for the Friars,
completing his first hat trick of the year in the third period to give the
Friars a 3-2 lead.
The Friars opened the scoring in the contest when Providence junior
co-captain Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) flipped a backhander between Maine
goaltender Mike Morrison's right arm and the post for his 12th goal of the
season. Rask's goal was set up by sophomore Cody Loughlean (Innisfail,
Alta.) and Dominic Torretti (Ludlow, Mass.) as Torretti carried the puck
into the offensive zone and Loughlean cycled the puck around the back of the
net to Rask.
Rask tallied again for the Friars at the 10:51 mark of the first period, as
he skated in on Morrison and beat the Black Bears' keeper with a quick
wrist-shot through the pads. PC caught Maine on a line change, leading to
Rask's second of the game and 13th of the season with assists going to
freshmen David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.) and Jeff Mason (Easthampton,
Mass.).
PC and Maine skated through a scoreless second period, as the Black Bears
outshot the Friars, 12-3.
The third period was when the scoring began for real, as Maine scored all
three of their tallies in the final 20 minutes. Francis Nault got the Black
Bears on the scoreboard at the 8:53 mark of the third period when he scored
on the power play. The Friars' Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) was whistled for
hooking at the same time, giving Maine back-to-back man-advantage
situations. Nault capitalized for the Bears less than 60 seconds later,
beating PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) to tie the score
for Maine.
With just 1:29 remaining in the contest, Rask skated in on Morrison for the
Friars and was able to stuff his shot under the pads of the Maine goaltender
to give Providence what seemed like the game-winning goal. Loughlean fed
Rask, collecting the puck off a Maine turnover in the neutral zone. Rask's
heroics would not stand up, though, as Maine - with Morrison pulled in favor
of the extra attacker - scored 18 seconds later to once again knot the
score, this time for good at 3-3. Neither team was able to score in overtime.
Schaefer tied his career-high with 44 saves - the fourth time he has
recorded 44 stops this season - while Morrison made 23 saves as Maine
outshot the Friars', 47-26.
Providence returns to action next weekend with a home-and-home series with
Boston University. The Friars' travel to BU to start the two-game series on
Friday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m.
