PROVIDENCE HOCKEY SKATES TO 3-3 TIE WITH UMASS LOWELL

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 3-3
overtime tie with UMass Lowell on Friday, February 8 at PC's Schneider Arena
in front of a sellout crowd of 3,036.
The Friars got on the scoreboard in the first period when sophomore forward
Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) fired a rebound into the open net to give
PC a 1-0. The goal was Loughlean's first of the 2001-02 season. Senior
forward Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) and junior Devin Rask (Parkside,
Sask.) assisted on the score.
UMass Lowell tied the contest at 1-1 just 26 seconds into the second period
when Peter Hay scored on the power play. Ed McGrane and Josh Reed assisted
on the tally for the River Hawks.
The Friars took a 2-1 lead 35 seconds into the third period when sophomore
forward Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) slipped a rebound under the pads of
UMass goaltender Cam McCormick. Sophomore defenseman Regan Kelly (Imperial,
Sask.) and senior center Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) assisted on the goal.
The River Hawks tied the contest at 2-2 at the 6:37 mark of the final
period when Anders Strome beat PC's junior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow
Grass, Sask.). The Friars scored 39 seconds later when Fregoe fired in a
shot off a rebounds after his linemates, Zingoni and DiSalvatore, each had
shots knocked away by McCormick. Fregoe's 14th goal of the season stood up
as the Friars held the 3-2 lead until the final minutes of the contest. With
McCormick pulled for an extra attacker and the River Hawks already with a
man advantage and on the power play, Lowell's Ed McGrane circled with the
puck at the top of the slot and fired a wrist shot past Schaefer at 18:40 to
knot the score at 3-3 and send the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Friars had three scoring opportunities, but
McCormick kept PC from scoring the game-winning goal. The Lowell senior made
27 saves in the tie while Schaefer recorded 25 for Providence.
The Friars return to action on Sunday afternoon, February 10 when they
travel to New Hampshire to face the Wildcats for a 4:00 p.m. start.
