Providence hockey upsets no. 3 new hampshire, 4-3
The Friars win for just the second time ever at UNH's Whittemore Center.

DURHAM, N.H. --  The Providence College men's ice hockey team upset No.
3-ranked New Hampshire, 4-3, on Sunday, January 13 in Durham, N.H. The
Friars earned their first victory of the season over a ranked team and for
the weekend, the Friars earned three points in HOCKEY EAST play with Sunday
afternoon's win and Friday, January 11th's 5-5 tie with Boston University.
        The win also marked the first time since January 27, 1996 that Providence
defeated the Wildcats at the Whittemore Center. PC's January, 1996 win was
a 5-4 decision in the team's first game at the Whittemore Center.
        The Friars opened the scoring in the first period when junior co-captain
Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) tipped a Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) blast
from the point for a power-play tally at the 8:05 mark. The goal for the
Friars was just the fourth time this season that they have scored first in
a contest, and PC did so on Friday, January 11th in the 5-5 tie with Boston
University. Senior center Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) received the second
assist on Rask's fourth goal in the last five games. Rask's goal was the
only scoring in the game's first 20 minutes, though both teams had
additional scoring chances. Rask had a one-on-one chance foiled when he had
his low backhander shot kicked out by UNH's Matt Carney. The Wildcats' Sean
Collins had a wide open net late in the period but fanned on the shot as
the bouncing puck missed his stick.
        Providence increased their lead to 2-0 at the 16:19 mark of the second
period when senior Marc Suderman (Regina, Sask.) finished off some pretty
passing from junior Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) and Fregoe. Wood
fired the puck into the offensive zone for the Friars and DiSalvatore
collected the puck to Carney's right along the boards. DiSalvatore slid a
pass through a defender's legs to Fregoe, who found Suderman all alone at
the left post. Suderman one-timed Fregoe's pass by a sliding Carney for his
second goal of the season.
        New Hampshire finally got on the scoreboard in the second period, when Jim
Abbott scored on the power play. The Friars came right back as junior
forward Doug Wright (Kamsack, Sask.) pounded in a rebound of junior
defenseman Shawn Weiman's (Marshall, Sask.) shot. Wright's goal came just
1:33 after UNH cut Providence's lead in half. Suderman added his second
goal of the night, firing a one-timer off a John Luszcz (Ludlow, Mass.)
pass at 15:50 to increase the Friars' lead to 4-1.
        The Wildcats cut the Providence lead in half just 2:03 into the third
period when Nathan Martz collected a loose puck in the PC crease and knock
it past a prone Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.). The Wildcats cut the
Friars' lead to just one goal when Josh Prudden fired a rocket from the
left circle past Schaefer with 12:50 remaining in the contest.
        Schaefer withstood a final barrage and finished with 31 saves in the victory.
        The Friars return to action next weekend when they play a pair of
non-conference contests. On Friday, January 18, the Friars host the
University of Connecticut at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena. On Saturday,
January 19, PC hosts St. Cloud State at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider.
