St. Cloud State University (Minn.) Men's Hockey Update for Oct. 23, 2000

SCSU Men's Hockey Release 10/23/00
Upcoming Games:
    Oct. 27 - Denver at SCSU, 7:05 p.m.
Oct. 28 - Denver at St. Cloud State, 7:05 p.m.

UPCOMING GAMES: The St. Cloud State menšs hockey team (3-0-1) will host
Denver University (0-2-0) this weekend as both teams open their 2000-01 WCHA
schedule. On Oct. 27, SCSU will play DU at 7:05 p.m. in the National Hockey
Center (5,763 cap./200x100). The two teams will return to the NHC at 7:05
p.m. on Oct. 28 to complete the series.

THE RESULTS: In the first match played by St. Cloud State University in
Bemidji since the 1986-87 season, the Husky men's hockey team charted a 3-1
win non-conference win over Bemidji State University. Bemidji scored first
in the game on a power play goal at 6:14 of the first. The Huskies
responded in quick fashion with Tyler Arnason's goal at 15:11 of the first
with assists by Mark Hartigan and Duvie Westcott. In the second period,
Mark Hartigan posted his 23rd career goal at 7:13 on another SCSU power play
with assists by Arnason and senior Brandon Sampair. The game was iced at
12:08 of the second when Mike Walsh scored with an assist from Colin Peters
. Senior goalie Scott Meyer posted 28 saves and his 24th career win for the
Huskies...in action on Oct. 21, the Huskies returned to the NHC for a 7-0
win against Bemidji State. The offensive explosion was SCSU biggest margin
of win since an 8-0 win at UMD on 1/28/00. Joe Motzko gained two goals and
one assist in the game, while Chris Purslow scored the first and game
winning goal at 4:21 of the first period. Mark Haritgan and Tyler Arnason
each had a goal and an assist, while Duvie Westcott and Nate DiCasmirro each
scored goals. Jake Moreland was the goalie of record with his first college
shutout thanks to 20 saves in the game. SCSU outshot the Beavers 43-20 in
the match. SCSU is now 4-0 against BSU at the Division I level.

FINAL 1999-2000 RECORD: In 1999-2000, the Huskies continued their tradition
of excellence with a 23-14-3 overall record and a 16-9-3 third place record
in the always rugged WCHA. The Huskies advanced to the Final Five of the
WCHA tournament last season, which included a 6-4 third place win over
Minnesota. The icing on the cake was a trip to the 2000 NCAA Division I
East Regional, and a number 12 ranking in the final Division I national
poll. The 23 wins ties a school record for most wins in a season. The
Huskies also had 23 wins during the 1997-98 campaign.

HEAD COACH: SCSU coach Craig Dahl (Pacific Lutheran, 1976) in his 14th
season as head coach for the Huskies. He is the only coach that SCSU has
had since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 1987-88. Dahl has a career
record of 232-233-38 at SCSU and a 19-year career coaching mark of
308-321-40. Dahl won his 300th career game on 2/19/00. In 1997-98, Dahl
was named the WCHA Coach of the Year. He has won more games than any SCSU
hockey coach. In 2000-01, Dahl will be assisted by Doc DelCastillo (SCSU,
1992) in his third season and first year coach Brad Willner (Lake Superior
State, 1995).

ALMOST EVEN: The Huskies and Coach Dahl both own a 232-233-38 record since
the program went Division I in 1987-88. A pair of wins this weekend against
Denver would allow SCSU to go over the overall .500 mark for the first time
since going Division I.

500th GAME AT SCSU: The Ferris State game on Oct. 13th was the 500th
Division I hockey game in the history of the program at SCSU. The game was
also Dahlšs 500th as a coach at SCSU. SCSU.

FIRST TIMERS: Rookie Colin Peters scored his first collegiate point with an
assist on Oct. 20 against BSU...Jake Moreland gained his first college
goalie shutout with a 7-0 win over BSU on Oct. 21...Matt Hendricks gained
his first college point with an assist against BSU on Oct. 21...First goals
of the new season were scored over the weekend by Mark Hartigan, Nate
DiCasmirro, Joe Motzko, Chris Purslow, Mike Walsh and Duvie Westcott.

BEST START AT SCSU: The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team is off
to its best start in the history of the program at the Division I level.
Through four games, the Huskies own a 3-0-1 record. The previous best
four-game starts of 3-1 were charted in 1996-97 and in 1989-90.

CAUGHT SHORT-HANDED: The Huskies' Tyler Arnason and Joe Motzko each scored
shorthanded goals in SCSU's 7-0 win over Bemidji State on Oct. 21. The two
shorthanded goals marked the first time since Jon Cullen tallied one against
UMD on Jan. 28, 2000. The Huskies' seven-goal win over Bemidji was the
team's largest margin of victory since an 8-0 win over UMD on Jan. 28, 2000.

MOVING UP ON THE CHARTS: On the subject of Tyler Arnason, the junior center
from Winnipeg, Manitoba had another big weekend against Bemidji State.
Arnason posted a goal and an assist on Oct. 20 and a goal and an assist on
Oct. 21. In four games played against BSU, Arnason has five goals and three
assists to his credit. In his career, Arnason has 86 points (35g, 51a). He
ranks 32nd on the all-time SCSU scoring list and is tied for that spot along
with Eric Johnson (1991-95) and Matt Cullen (1995-97), who is currently
playing for the NHL's Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Arnason's 51 assists ranks him
16th in the SCSU career charts, which is one ahead of Florida Panther
standout Bret Hedican (who had 50 assists during his career at SCSU from
1988-91).

NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Huskies were 14-6-1 at home in 1999-00. SCSU has
posted a 123-68-20 all-time record at the National Hockey Center. St. Cloud
State was 8-6-2 on the road and 1-2-0 in neutral site games last winter...so
far in 2000-01, the Huskies are 2-0-1 at the National Hockey Center. In the
friendly confines of the NHC, the Huskies own an all-time win percentage of
.630.

MEYER TAKES A BREAK: Jake Moreland's start in the nets was unique since it
marked the first time since Nov. 12, 1999 that SCSU's Scott Meyer did not
start in goal. Meyer had started in 34 consecutive games for the Huskies
dating back to a 4-3 loss to UMD on Nov. 13, 1999. Meyer posted a 22-9-3
record during that streak and seven shutouts. So far in 2000-01, Meyer has
a 2-0-1 record and a 1.62 goals against average.
