<< The meaning of "SECRETUM" can't be explained to some >>

I asked, "what does Pound's statement about the SECRETUM means," NOT "what
is the meaning of the THE SECRETUM?"

<<Wei,
I quoted from Pound's letter to "elucidate", as I said in my July 31
posting, the problem faced by one who would proclaim the existence of
mysteries . . . .>>

Yes, I understand that. But the statement may raise more questions about the
alleged problems than it answers, unless we would be able to explain what it
means. I have offered one possible interpretation; can you offer another?
I don't think posting the quote without an explanation is sufficient to
elucidate the problem of Pound's attitude toward the Catholic Church and
toward the masses.

<<which IMHO is similar to acknowledging the existence of the anima in the
collective unconscious and suffers from some of the same attendant
difficulties. >>

This is a very worthwhile observation, I think. I would like to see it
expanded. Is it not the case that in both Jungian and Freudian analysis,
one of the main goals is to take the unintellible, the "mysterious", if you
will, and give it rational form, or at least a rational explanation which
can aid our comprehension of the said mysterious phenomenon?

<<That is, many people, perhaps Pound's 95%, have no idea what
in the hell you're talking about, and it is a very difficult subject to
discuss even for us who profess some inkling.>>

It may be difficult or it may not be. But as far as Pound is concerned, are
not his claims about knowledge of the "Mystery" suspect to some degree at
least? Should we not question his ability to access the "Mystery" if he was
unable to fathom the simple truth that fascism was a moral, spiritual, and
social abomination?

<<This list is a witness to
this fact. Perhaps it is better to get it from dreams and poetry.>>

This list is a witness to the fact that some small number of individuals
have differences about Pound's political and religious outlook (and about a
few other issues). What I mean by this is that one cannot conclude anyhing
about the nature of the MYSTERY itself, or about the ability of human beings
to apprehend it from the postings on this list. We are only a few
individuals.

<<Again IMHO when Pound reflects here on catholics I think he is saying
that the above matters (no pun intended) are handled by their priests and
their church's dogma, and they are only required to follow these obediently.
What is so difficult about this?>>

The difficulty lies in Pound's saying that he he does not believe the 95%,
or the masses are capable of understanding the profound truths which he is
capable of comprehending. In fact, if we take literally Christs saying "The
Truth shall set you free," and if Pound personally believes that Catholic
dogma obscures the truth, then it would seem that Pound wants the masses to
remain in the Church, and to remain unfree. Is he not saying, in the quote
you presented, leave them in the Church so they will leave me alone?

<<But if you want to take issue with every statement Pound ever
made.......>>

One thing at a time. [I don't see how we can discuss "every statement which
Pound ever made." We can only discuss a subset of the complete statements].
Let us limit ourselves now, and simply talk about this statement which you
quoted.

Regards,

Wei
