Hell of a game and all the credit to Cornell - they played really well.
Disappointed by the outcome, but really proud of the season the team put together.

I agree, and think it will maybe come down to how they start (which seems like such a cliche thing to say). Even though they had a few come-from-behind wins, they were MUCH better when they scored first.
Gotta say - ESPN+ has been a total gamechanger. Being able to watch most of the games this season has been a real treat.
Agree! I'm glad not to have landed with BC or BU. Also happy that we were able to stay relatively close to home.

I just received a call from my sales rep at the Garden. Private suites for April's Frozen Four at Boston's TD Garden will become available on Monday afternoon and it looks like the price will be about $450/person. That works out to $150/game. For those that were with us in Tampa in 2012, this is only slightly more than the $125/game we paid for those seats and far less than the $200+/game we would have paid in Philadelphia last year. I am shocked prices are this low for Boston.

From where I sat, the initial flop was definitely a dive. I guess I can't comment on any injury that might of happened after that as I didn't see any contact on the way down or after he hit the ice. I even commented at the time that I wondered if he hit his own head when he feel backwards. I would love to watch a replay of the incident. Would Hockey East post a video off the play along with the suspension announcement similar to what the NHL does? Sent from Samsung Mobile -------- Original message -------- From: james
I've seen it written up as the neck injury that Marotta suffered after being elbowed by Lomberg. Marotta was not acting. I thought that Lomberg should have been called for a lot on that play, but not for the elbow, rather for the following chop down onto the collarbone/neck of a goaltender who was lieing face down and defenseless. I spoke with Ryan after the game and he said that he never touched Marotta... and the whole team said that they never saw a thing from their angle. I was very high up, near center ice and ALL
I think u'll find Lomberg's suspension came from the play where he laid out the Merrimack player just inside our blue line in the second period. (He got a penalty for interference on the play). I don't think his suspension had anything to do with his "bump" of Marotta. That was a pathetic bit of acting. If anything he may have hurt himself when he flopped to the ice. If not he was doing his best to look "groggy" as he skated off. I saw this "arguably best goalie" against umass a couple weeks ago and umass's mastalerz in that game made many far better saves... Witt was very beatable high glove side, iirc. Granted nu's defense was standing around that game.
And for my money, providence has an even better goalie than Witt
All that said... Did anyone else think they saw Lemberg chop down on Marorra's collarbone after the "dive"?

So much for the embellishment call on Marotta. You'll never get a referee to admit he calls what he thinks sees, not what happened. Embellishment is a call better left uncalled IMHO.
The rest of the story is that Ryan's absence Friday at Matthews Arena will be significant. Arguably, NU has the best goalie in the country and a number of dangerous forwards. Maine will have to be better in all areas than the MC series to have a chance to win. Changing lines may make us better in the playoffs, but will make this series very tough.

I'm not (yet) a snowbird and haven't traveled to the FL tournament, so I can't gauge its popularity in the form of attendance, but I assume it's not very good, else it would be paying for itself. With few exceptions, the teams have been ECAC & HEA, so is this a showcase or a working vacation? If I was a recruit, I'd find the FL trip attractive, but have the successful recruits found this to be true?
I'm concerned about this -- not about doing something different than the Florida tournament, that's fine -- but more about the implication that it is more for cost cutting measures than anything. My biggest fear is that "Maine hockey" has had its glory day and will never return. I know we are all encouraged, but this is more than just having a top flight coach. To be a premier program you also have to be able to fund and compete as such. That takes a lot of money. There are many, many hard working volunteers that are trying to do
Not too long ago there was a "GOVERNOR'S CUP" which included MAINE, UNH, LOWELL, and VERMONT.; last one was held in Durham. It's intention was to have their own -Series- the Non-Boston teams play in lieu of the BeanPot. Why don't we do that again?

I think they need to do some sort of bring a friend/buy two get one free type of promotion to get people back into the habit of going to games. I think many are skeptical, but I think if we can get them in the door and feel good about the direction of the program, people will come back. It's that ripping off of the bandaid that is the problem. When you saw a lifeless team for the past five years, there is good reason not to come back right away. But, these guys play hard and I think they
I thought the article a lot more fair than the title. The stories are a team that is much more fun to watch and a schedule that has (and will) suck.
A small part of article, but IMHO huge is that once someone leaves being a season ticket holder, the likelihood of getting them back is small to nonexistent, no matter how great a show you're putting on.
And your memory is just as bad.... Last time I said that it was the frozen four prices that were too high!!! And YOU were the one who corrected me then too.
But even so, forgetting the particulars... Who beside avid fans and player families are going to take their kids to a hockey regional at the ticket prices you just quoted???
You have given this misinformation a number of times. Please check your facts.
I just checked regional prices of the 4 tournaments this spring. One was $40 (game or day?), another $83 for two days, another was $65 for two days. The most expensive was St Paul at $90 for a two day package.
Makes sense to me. Half the travel ... bigger crowds. Super regionals might be interesting for fans, but would be more expensive for fans due to additional day, wouldn't necessarily increase crowds, and would decrease expenses minimally (due to extra day).

I got the chance to see UMaine hockey on TV last night for first time this year.
I will admit that I've been skeptical about the "Red Gendron era" as being an immediate tonic for what ails Maine. I am not going to get too wrapped up in one game, but I saw some very positive things. Most noticeable differences were how Maine no longer just dumps the puck

I worry a little bit about the potential of running out of steam later in the year. The guys who were here previously aren't accustomed to working this hard every shift of every game, and the young kids who are just coming in may not have the experience of playing so many games (I'm not sure where they've come from or how their schedules looked previously). So, I worry a bit that when we get into the new year and late in the HE schedule, the kids will start to run out of gas (not intentionally, just naturally).
My observation is that as Red promised, the compete level is there. Just about every shift, all game long so far. It's clear we don't have the talent of other teams, but hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. That's our motto this season.
Honestly, I wish we has those St.Lawrence games back. I think we would have at least split.
I didn't get to see this weekend's game (I was following some friends on Facebook and Twitter to keep up), but I got to see some earlier games (the series against UMass that wasn't league play) and I have to agree. For me, the biggest difference is the feeling of effort. A lot of the things the team did under Whitehead (like the constant dump and chase and the lack of consistent pressure) spoke to a team that wasn't pushing hard, wasn't conditioned and wasn't putting in the required effort all the time. What we've seen so far - whether

When tickets were printed, Maine would be playing UNH at UNH Friday January 24 and at UMaine Sunday January 26 at 2pm. Some schedules I've see had the Sunday game at 7pm instead of 2pm.
All of the tickets and schedules having the UNH@Maine game on Sunday January 26 are wrong/outdated.

Each team in hockey east plays 2 conference games against every other team. Once those games are scheduled, each team tried to fill its schedule with non conference games. Maine and umass chose to play each other twice knowing those games dont count toward conference standings, just like when BC plays B U in the beanpot and that game is a non- conference game.

For those not interested in the NCAA "priority" number, you can buy on stub hub for a fraction of the cost. Last year it got down to $50 for the whole weekend. I expect demand will be higher since it is Philadelphia and there probably won't be 4 first time teams in the running.

Who could possibly take their families to these games at those prices and why haven't they figured out that they would make more money by selling a hundred times more tickets at one fifth of those prices?

I'll hypothesize a bit... I don't see Grant going further West, especially given the fact that he was integral in the hiring process of Red Gendron at Maine. My guess is that he would come back as a volunteer assistant anyways, giving him time to be as retired or as invested as he wants to be.
I heard that on WCSH-TV this morning, went to the BDN web site and nothing there. I'll wait for Larry to say something before I worry about it. And while we all would like to see Grant back in Maine, I don't think that's going to happen. If he becomes "active" again, it will probably be in Denver.

You know, I was thinking about that as the tweets of Roy's presser in Denver came across my feed... A combined seven Stanley Cups being named coach the same day. That has to be some kind of record :)
So are the hockey team's colors now Red, White and Blue? That's very patriotic!

His base salary was 211K which was just slightly above TW's 190K, and that was after 19 years on the job. When the Maine hockey program is run right, it can turn a profit of well over $1M/year. From 2003-10 it turned $8M profit and was close to UHN as the most profitable public university hockey program east of Ann Arbor. I would have loved to see Gwoz, but the school was just never going to fork over the cash to get him here and I wonder how much interest there was on his part.
I read he made over half a million a year including incentives

It was Tim who coined the phrase "internet crazies" or maybe it was Internet nutcases?
Not sure why Corkum did what he did but he threw his "former" boss under the bus. My guess would be he wanted some separation from Tim, not sure how social media does that when its the search committee making recommendations not the internet crazies.
Thanks for the kind words, Bob. I was hoping to meet you in Pittsburgh. Sorry I didn't recognize you. The past two Frozen Fours have been most enjoyable meeting many friends from around Clegg hockey and spending enjoyable hours with my high school senior son, Ben.
I think the release of Whitehead at this time has been inadvertently poor timing. Montgomery, though not my favorite, would have been a great candidate; I'm happy he'll have a great chance to show his stuff at DU.
Corkum posted his message on USCHO (or had Laura do it incognito) and Laura posted it on Facebook. I'm guessing - and this is only a guess - that Laura tried unsuccessfully to talk him out of it. Some of Corkum's message was exactly what the fan base wanted to hear, but it wasn't very professional. Aside from looking like a campaign message, he unceremoniously threw Tim under the bus. Again, the fan base may have eaten that up but from a professional standpoint, that was a huge mistake. It now feels like a coup has taken place in Orono
It is no secret that Corkum and Whitehead didn't exactly see eye to eye and I think that shined through in Corkum's "campaign post".
I'm with Wayne on Cronin, no thank you.
I'm willing to give someone a fair shake, but since we've gone this far to oust the coach, I'd rather start with whole new staff and give them a shot. Corkum may not be Whitehead, but he still represents the "old regime" to me. (Kerluke needs to go too!!!)
Also, while Pellerin years ago wanted to return to UMaine to coach someday, I've heard his interest is NHL now. If Cronin was to get an interview, I'd be very disappointed ... probably enough to not want to be seen as a fan of the team. While some Maine fans have praised Corkum for his Facebook post (via the SID!), I found it ... outrageous for a candidate to say and very disappointing since it was via the Athletic office. Bad show all around.
I don't feel the list is legit. If the school, or someone close to the committee, leaked this list, I assume Tremblay (and perhaps Gendron) is a head fake while the committee takes a closer look at Gwozdecky. In the end, I think the job is still Corkum's.

With my interest in physics and hockey, I was fascinated to read the following account which has less to do with college hockey than steaks, BBQs and cold Maine winters. It is entertaining and it does have several very interesting references, including Alain Hache's classic book "*The Physics of Hockey*" (on Amazon at http://tinyurl.com/bebgoep):
Not really Maine or college hockey related (but we did have a Frozen Four there a bit ago) ... here's a time-lapse video at the Washington, DC Verison Center being transformed from a concrete floor to a hockey rink complete with paint, logos and ice ...
UMaine hockey fans planning on going to the Friday UVM@UMaine game or watching or listening might enjoy knowing this is an 8pm game time, despite what your ticket says. While some advertisements have noted the time change from 7 to 8pm, most have omitted it, even suggesting you come early to get the free something to waive or wear.
Even BC has down years. Next time you're at the Heights, mention the name "Steve Cedorchuk" then run for your life. :)

Please keep me on the list as well. In my opinion 15th in the country (http://www.uscho.com/) is far better than mediocre, middle of the pack. And given how tough Hockey East is, the Alfond will continue to have a lot of top quality college hockey. And these "fair-weather fans" will be back when Maine starts challenging for a Hockey East title and/or a trip to the Frozen Four.
I'm extremely unhappy with the administration and what they have allowed the team to become (mediocre, middle of the pack) - but the students still come to play and work hard to put it all out on the ice. I want to continue to support them...
Plus, how else would I have known that they changed a couple of rules and allowed 4 vs. 4 OT. Although, I must say - turning it into a playground decision (if we can all agree...) is kinda beneath the NCAA I think.
