First Day
The new school year commences!
And, to observe the teeming throngs converging on the academies one would see both the morose and crestfallen lumbering lethargically toward the hallowed halls as well as the eager and exuberant sprinting swiftly to their appointed classrooms. Of this latter group one would find none more compelled toward their destinations than the privileged pupils of the Seventh Standard Deviation Section of the Already Highly Gifted, Terrifically Talented, Insufferably Intelligent and Unshakably Self-Confident -and yes, that is all written on the door- Academy of Advanced Metaphysical Studies. Greetings!
First, it was a genuine pleasure to meet so many of you during the book sale last Saturday. Alas, we are still inundated with books! Boxes of books! Mountains of books! We're plagued by recurrent nightmares in which battalions of books are marching inexorably upon us with the obscure emperor Maximinus Thrax at the head. (Go figure. It's a nightmare.)

As one rather acerbic wit once proclaimed, "Give us your voracious dragons by the baker's dozen, enough demonic entities to populate a board meeting, and a broadside assault of plagues, pestilence, pains and putrefaction. But, please preserve us from any occasion for tiresome rhapsody."
I shall bear this quote in mind as I proceed and will spare you the anguish of quasi-poetic sentimentality, even though the throat lump that Robert Frost claims is the beginning of all poetry is lead-dense and of rapidly expanding proportions.
