On kissing your sister ...

HEAL, as most rating/ranking systems treats a tie as 1/2 a loss and 1/2
a win.

Mass-Lowell and Fairfield might ask "What is a tie?" as they have yet
to experience one. Nine teams have experienced just one D-I tie. Yet
there are several teams with more than a handful of ties so far this
season.

Western Michigan (8 ties, or 25.0% of games) and Minnesota (8 ties,
22.2%) lead the NCAA D-I world, with Michigan State (7 ties, 21.2%),
Michigan (6 ties, 17.6%) and Ferris State (6 ties, 18.8%) close behind.

Except for the teams with weakest record, it would seem that the rate of
ties does not correlate with winning success. (I guess at this, not
having tried to measure it).

One might ask if league is a factor in ties. Perhaps it is. Here are
the league average rates of ties so far this season:

      League % of games tied
      ------------+----------------
      CCHA 14.8
      Independent 12.1
      WCHA 10.2
      MAAC 9.3
      ECAC 8.6
      HEA 7.3

Yes, so far this season a CCHA team is twice as likely to tie as
an HEA team!

"Are tie games more probable for low-scoring teams"? "Are equally
matched teams more likely to tie"? "Do some teams have fewer or more
ties than one might mathematically predict"? HEAL doesn't help with any
of these questions. Perhaps some stats junkies can venture their
opinions.

Still, I predict very *few* ties after the games next weekend. :-)

On this ranking ...

This ranking uses games played by NCAA Division I teams eligible for
consideration to the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championships.
Specifically excluded this season are the University of Nebraska-Omaha,
as they are in their last year as an "emerging" NCAA Division I program,
and the two Division II teams from the MAAC (Sacred Heart and American
International).

On "The Heal Point System" ...

The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in
several sports. The Heal Point System was developed many years ago by
Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams.

On the Maine secondary school calculation ...

"P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each
team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie,
and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is
1.00.

"T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams.
"T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the
opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing
by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10.

Note: This Division I college hockey "Heal Point System" ranking uses
the number of games played instead of the number of games scheduled.
Since all games in Division I college hockey are normally played,
there is no difference between this and the traditional Heal Point
System at end of season and this method produces better preliminary
   results.

Game scores for this ranking have been provided by US College Hockey
Online, sometimes supplemented by other sources. USCHO's composite of
all Division I men's ice hockey games is available at

in the section marked schedules and then Division I composite schedule.
