In general, I don't like "list policing".  Maybe a better response is to
send a message to the offending parties to take their disucssion offline.
But as usual in life, put yourself in their shoes before expecting any
action to occur.  The Maine/Walsh discussion certainly began as a normal
thread.  In some of our eyes, it degenerated into a personal discussion in
which no further information was being offered to the list.  But if the
parties involved thought this, of course they would take it offline; they're
not idiots (working axiom: a hockey-l member is ipso facto not an idiot).
 
It speaks better of us as a group to allow people to moderate their own
behavior.  There are a few people who will *never* get it (there are 1 or 2
people on this list who when I see their name I just delete their post,
unread).  But it is also better to allow us to make up our own minds about
what we are going to read.
 
Just my three cents (inflation adjusted).
