From the Clarkson University News page August 28, 1997 Clarkson University has named Geoff Brown as Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. Brown has been associated with Clarkson through four decades since arriving in Potsdam as an undergraduate in the late 1960s. Brown, who received a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Clarkson in 1972 and a master's degree in accounting in 1975, has been a student-athlete, coach and an administrator at the University. A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Brown will assume his duties as Athletic Chair on September 8, 1997. He succeeds long-time Clarkson Athletic Director Bill O'Flaherty, who accepted the position of Director of Player Personal with the Los Angeles Kings in early August. "We are all very excited about Geoff's appointment as Chair. He brings to the position a long history at Clarkson and wealth of experience in a variety of areas that will be of benefit to the Athletic Department," stated Michael E. Cooper, Vice President of Student Affairs. Brown has held numerous positions at Clarkson and most recently served as the University's Executive Director for Enrollment Planning, Transfer and International Admissions and new Student Financial Assistance. From 1994 through 1996, he acted as Executive Director for Student Financial Assistance, Enrollment Planning and International Admissions. Brown has also held various administrative positions in the University's admissions and financial aid offices since starting his employment at Clarkson in 1977. As an undergraduate at Clarkson, Brown played three years of hockey under coach Len Ceglarski from 1969-72. Through 61 career games as a left wing, he scored 34 points on 11 goals and 23 assists. Brown also competed in golf and baseball at Clarkson. From 1981 through 1989, Brown was Clarkson's junior varsity hockey coach and also assisted the varsity. He also served as Clarkson's representative to the Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) Hockey Policy Committee from 1983-1993, acting as Co-chair during 1986 and 1987. He also represented Clarkson on the Empire Athletic Association (EAA) Senior Administrators Council concerning Division III sports. Brown could also be heard on the airwaves as a radio sports broadcaster for WPDM/WSNN Radio during Clarkson hockey games. Brown resides in Potsdam with his wife Marni and their son Cameron. Clarkson students can compete in 14 varsity sports at the NCAA Division III level, while the men's hockey squad is a national powerhouse in Division I. The ski teams participate in the United States Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA). Clarkson athletic teams have enjoyed great success through the years. The University's hockey team has been a perennial power in Division I, boasting the best winning percentage in college hockey at .664. The Golden Knights have won seven ECAC regular season championships, including the league title in 1996-97. Clarkson, which has graduated 31 hockey All-Americas, has participated in 16 NCAA Tournaments, including the past three seasons. At the Division III level, Clarkson has sent numerous teams to postseason play in recent years, including NCAA playoff appearances by the men's soccer, women's basketball and men's lacrosse squads. The Golden Knights' Division III teams compete regionally in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA), which has produced numerous NCAA Champions and is comprised of top quality private institutions from within New York State. ==== Good luck, Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Beancounters of the world, unite!
