Greg Mikolas ([log in to unmask]) asks... >As a "rink - rat" a few years ago in Melville, Saskatchewan I met >several local juniors who went on to play college hockey. One of >these individuals was Darren Maloney who went on to play in Michigan >or Wisconsin (I think). Has anyone heard of him, and , if so, do you >know what-ever became of him? Darren Maloney played defense for Western Michigan Univ in 1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96. To my knowledge, he had to sit out his freshman year (1992-93) due to being overage when entering WMU. However, he fell under the retroactive Prop 59 ruling and *could* have returned for a final season in 1996-97. He choose not to. He was selected to the CCHA All-Academic Team in 1994-95 and 1995-96, majoring in Anthropology...hence, I assume he received his degree and that played a part in his decision not to return to WMU. He was an Honorable Mention All-CCHA selection in 1995-96 and finished second in the voting for CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman that season. He was perhaps the finest D on one of the CCHA's best defensive units. He has gone on to play minor professional hockey. At last report, his 1996-97 stats were: 5-22--27 and 56 PIM in 49 games with Peoria (ECHL) 0-0--0 and 6 PIM in 8 games with Chicago (IHL) 0-0--0 and 2 PIM in 3 games with San Antonio (IHL) John Haeussler ([log in to unmask]) HOCKEY-L is for discussion of college ice hockey; send information to [log in to unmask], The College Hockey Information List.
