The University of Wisconsin pulls out a big win in Grand Forks tonight in front of a sell-out crowd. ND's Kevin Hoogstein scored the first goal on a slick break away only two minutes into the first period. However, that would be the only lead for the Sioux. Wisconsin scored the next two goals, the first one with around five minutes to go in the first by Haley and the second mid-way through the middle period by Smith (more on this goal later). Ian Kallay answered for UND with around five minutes left in the third, but that would be it for the Sioux. UW scores the next three goals, all of which happened in the final period. The last goal was an empty-netter by Kuk. Quick Comments: WOW! UND looked terrible tonight. The team never seemed to have their transition game game with the exception of the first ten minutes of the game. Also, the forechecking was the worst of the year. Many of the great chances the Badgers had were due to defensemen for UND not using the body to slow or stop the Badgers from advancing. Shots on goal were heavily in UND's favor (42 to 19), but the vast majority of the shots by the Sioux were low shots. Daubenspeck only needed to prtect the bottom thrid of the next for almost every shot. UND had some great oppourtunities, but time and time again, they shot the puck low. Dean Blais shifted some of the lines again, partly due to the major penalties given to two Sioux players from the St. Cloud series. The shifts may have been the main culprit for the poor passing and playing of the team. Aaron Vickar started in goal tonight and played a fairly good game. Daubenspeck has only lost one game against UND. The second goal for the Badgers was the most controversial of the night. A UW player and a UND player collided very close to the crease. The UW player then hit Vickar (due to the collision) which caused Vickar to partially fall over. As he was trying to recover, the UW player was having a hard time getting out of the crease (whether this was due to Vickar or not depends on who you talk to). About two seconds later, with the UW player still in the crease, the puck went in the net. It was ruled a goal much to the shagrin of the fans. Irregardless of the validity of the second goal, UW deserved the win. If UND wants to make it past the first round of the playoffs, tonight's style of play will have to be the exception and not the rule. charles - http://www.aero.und.edu/~cbell http://www.und.nodak.edu/ ---->UND's new webmaster :-) - P.S.
