I have one good explanation for the penalties in this one: The referee Graff is widely considered to be the worst ref in the CCHA and one of the worst in the country. His calls are incredibly inconsistent and there is often no method to his madness. During the first period it looked like he wanted to take control of the game. As a result, there were two different occasions where the teams were playing 3 on 3 (with none of the penalties being offsetting!!!). To my recollection, neither team took too many foolish penalties throughout. Actually it's a shame that this one wasn't televised by Prime or someone else; it was one of the better games I've seen all year. -- Marshall J.
