I haven't seen this posted before, so here is a summary of the Dartmouth-Umass game. Dartmouth continued its winning ways this weekend by defeating Umass 6-5. Dartmouth has now won 3 of its last 4 games -a very strong start to the season. Bob Gross --------------------- Here is a story by Matt Provence of the SI office at Dartmouth: contact: 603-646-2468 You can't win games from the penalty box, and the University of Massachusetts' hockey team found that out Saturday night. Dartmouth scored three power-play goals en route to a 6-5, come-from-behind victory at Thompson Arena. The Big Green, playing after a two-week layoff, fell behind early, as the Minutemen built a 2-0 lead by 13:17 of the first period. But thanks in part to a bevy of UMass penalties, the Big Green was able to come back for its third victory in a row. Trailing by two, Dartmouth scored three consecutive goals, including tallies by seniors Bill Kelleher and Darren Wercinski during separate five-on-three advantages. After Minuteman freshman Bryan Kennedy knotted the game, 3-3, at 5:33 of the second stanza, Dartmouth junior Jon Sturgis netted the go-ahead goal during a power play seven minutes later. The Big Green's fourth goal was assisted by Kelleher and senior Alex Dumas, who finished the night with a pair of assists. Junior Brian Fleming and sophomore Scott Peach added insurance goals to preserve the victory. For the Big Green, sophomore Ryan Chaytors recorded a goal and two assists, while UMass senior Rob Bonneau had a goal and three assists in the losing effort. Freshman goalie Jason Wong, who made 17 saves for Dartmouth, has now won his first four collegiate starts. Senior Rich Moriarty stopped 36 shots for the Minutemen. The Big Green made good on three of 10 power-play opportunities, while UMass was penalized 13 times for 37 minutes and had a player ejected from the game. At 5-3, Dartmouth is off to its best start since the 1982-83 season. The Big Green has now scored six goals in its last two contests.
