As a first year varsity program, UF participated in the Mercyhurst College - Hamot Hockey Classic this weekend in Erie, PA. UF played host Mercyhurst (#3 in latest NCAA Div. II poll)the first night and hung with the Lakers for a couple of periods. After a 2-1 first period, Mercyhurst scored 3 second period goals and received some strong goaltending from Chris Herbolshiemer to take a commanding 5-1 lead after two. The final was 7-1 for Mercyhurst as Mike Massis recorded a hat trick for the Lakers. Troy Martin (London, ONT) scored the lone tally for the Oilers, and Jim Brunner (Conneaut Lake, PA) made 48 saves in the contest. FINAL SCORE - Mercyhurst 7 UF 1 On Saturday, the Oilers faced AIC (#5 in latest NCAA Div. II poll) who was an 11-3 loser to Oswego on Friday in the opening game, and beat the Yellow Jackets 6-3. It was only the Oilers 15th game as a varsity program and they beat a Nationally ranked team in the schools first season as a NCAA member. UF had this game in hand from the beginning as they led 2-0 after the first period. Jamie Brooks (Dayton, OH) and Troy Martin (London, ONT) scored :34 seconds apart to give the Oilers the lead. In the second, Dusty Monasmith (Sylvania, OH) scored twice, and Larry Amsden (N. St. Paul, MN) added a goal to take a commanding 5-1 lead in the locker room after two periods. AIC managed to score twice early in the third to close the gap 5-3, but UF's Ryan Weber scored the Oilers 6th goal to put it out of reach and give them their 9th victory of the season and first ever against a Nationally Ranked team. Jason Koomen (Fruitvale, BC) recorded 28 saves for the winners. FINAL SCORE - UF 6 AIC 3 UF is now 9-6 overall as they head into Christmas Break. They will face Niagara for the fourth time in the opening game of the Elmira Tournament after New Years on Jan. 4th. Other teams are host Elmira, and Trinity College (CT).
