UND and Colorado College skate to a 5-5 tie in Grand Forks in front of over 5,500 fans. The tigers started out the scoring early in the first courtesy of a UND powerplay. However, UND quickly answered and scored the next three goals of the first. Even though UND had a 3-1 lead at this point, shots were fairly even at 10 to 9. In the second, the Sioux completely dominated by outshooting CC 18 to 2 and kept the puck out of the UND zone for the vast majority of the period. The only big sign of life for CC came from Jason Gudmundson who almost appeared to jump sidways past a UND defender and then finished the play off with a great shot that easily beat Kvalevog. UND seemed to score the game winner by getting a goal with only 7 seconds left in the period. It was not 5 to 2. Don Lucia should sell his 2nd intermission speach to a record company, becuase it would be guarenteed to go triple platinum in a few weeks! The Tigers came out and basically pummled UND as the Sioux decided that three goals would be a deficit that CC could not overcome. CC appeared to win every battle both large and small during the first fifteen minutes which happened to coincide to three more goals for CC. Final score- 5 to 5. QUICK thoughts: UND's powerplay was 0-5, CC's was 2-5. UND had a five minute powerplay in the second period but had 2 shots on net during the entire five minutes. Most of the UND powerplay minutes saw the puck either in the neutral zone or in UND's own zone! The Sioux powerplay sounds impressive on the road, but at home it is terrible. UND was also down by two players at one point thanks to a Sioux player getting a hooking call half way through a penalty. CC did not score with the two man advantage, but they did score while the second player was still in the box. Saves: Kvalevog - 17/ Lambert and Cugnet - 23 For Kvalevog, this was an unfortunate game. All of the goals that he let in were very good shots and due to poor defensive plays. CC goaltending would appear to be the main weakness of the team as neither goalie appeared very sharp. Defense: For UND the small defensive breakdowns ended up costing the team a point. CC ended up getting its goals either due to a breakaway or having 2 on 1 or 3 on 1 rushes at the Sioux net. UND defensmen tend to wait too long before they try to check the oncomming attackers. No rebounds! UND should have had 8 goals tonight. Three attempts were lost due to players not being in a good position for a rebound. More often then not, the offense had the players well off to the sides of the net, but no one was in front of the net. The fans: How do the fans handle a tie? They throw crap on the ice at the end of the game. One container of soda almost hit Kvalevog which caused him to take a swipe at it. Several other containers were thrown at the CC players. What a great way to improve your school's image. In disgust, Charles Bell - http://www.aero.und.edu/~cbell Two ways to go now!
