Here are some bits of information I've heard, either on the radio, or on the list, regarding the College Hockey Showcase and the Big Ten conference. There is talk of adding Ohio St. next year to the College Hockey Showcase. As a Big Ten team, they should be there. Jeff Sauer, on his radio show last week, mentioned that the coaches of the 4 participating teams want to continue the tournament. But, in the future, the event may be held at "on campus" sites. The Thanksgiving weekend makes it a tough draw, and there are a number of additional games held at the Joe Louis Arena, the Bradley Center, etc, during the season... specialty games, tournament championships, NCAA, etc, all of which can dilute the number of college hockey fans who can attend each of the events, and thus bring attendence down. [Not to mention college football, NFL, college basketball, NASCAR :-) ] I have an idea: Have the tournament with all 5 Div.1 Big Ten teams, and play a round robin system, with the Host school get a bye in the opening round. Rotate hosts schools each year. Play out until you have a winner. That winner becomes the Big Ten champion for the year too. Topic open for discussion! Yours, Terry E.
