In a game eerily similar to last season's ECAC championship game, Cornell (2-0-0) downed Harvard (1-2-0) 3-2 at the Bright Hockey Center. Like the title game, Harvard scored within the first minute of the game with a goal by Rob Millar less than 15 secs into the game (13 secs to be exact I think). And like the title game, Cornell came back and scored the next 2 goals. The first was a PP goal by UIC transfer Darren Tymchyshyn late in the 1st. The second was by Chad Wilson (I think) in the 2nd. Unlike the title game, there was some late scoring. Cornell padded the lead on a goal by freshman Mike Rutter midway throught the 3rd. Harvard scored in the final half minute (Joe Craigen had the goal) with the goalie on the bench. They could not tie the game in the final seconds, as Cornell escaped with the 3-2 win. The freshmen appeared to be impressive again. Ryan Moynihan set up the Rutter goal. Moynihan had 2 goals and 2 assists on the weekend, a solid performance for the freshman. Jason Elliot sparkled in net, at least for the middle 58 minutes of the game. I don't know the save count, but it must've been fairly high as the Crimson pressured alot. Unlike last night, the Cornell penalty kill came up big, fighting off 8 Crimson power plays. The Big Red return to Lynah next weekend to face UVM and Dartmouth. Heard another score on the radio: the Cornell women made it a sweep of Harvard on the day, as they topped the Crimson 2-1 at the All-American Tournament in Minnesota. Perhaps someone who saw the game live could give more information on the men's win. Unglued from the radio...finally, Billy Lustgarten Cornell '98 HOCKEY-L is for discussion of college ice hockey; send information to [log in to unmask], The College Hockey Information List.
