WOW! The three game, choke-at-the-end, streak for UND finally ended tonight as Jason Blake scored an overtime goal with only 16 seconds left. It definately gave the peopple in the sold-out (yeah, if that was sold out, why were there so many empty seats?) arena something to cheer about. The games itself was one of the more exciting games at UND in recent memory. The game didn't have a real flow to it. For awhile, it seemed as though everything was being iced, but after a little bit, the pace quickly picked up. The first goal of the game was scored by a DU player (sorry, I can't remember the name) in the first period. After that UND scored (either Blake or Panzer), followed by DU (Bjork - hey, it's the name of a band also, so it's easier to remember), UND in the third (I THINK Panzer got this one via a beautiful deek and a shot to his right hand side). The game ended with the before-mentioned shot with 16 seconds left. Quick comments: Cut the macarena and train garbage. If I want dance hits, I will go to the bar Kvalevog's two goals were courtesy of UND defensive breakdowns. He was not really tested tonight, as most of the shots were not difficult ones to stop. Thoughts on Mullin: he stopped a breakaway goal by Panzer which caused a smattering of applause from the UND fans. He also stopped a HUGE blast toward the end of the third. However, there were quite a few (okay, three or so) open nets that if UND had had someone positioned in front of the net, they would have scored. Penalties: poor officiating (IMHO) for the calls. Several DU penalties seemed quite questionable, and one "acting" maneuver by UND payed off with a DU penalty. Power Play: UND finally gets a powerplay goal. so, is the jinx finally over? Tomorrow night the two teams square off again. If it is as exciting as tonight, Grand Forks MAY really have something to cheer about. charles - http://www.aero.und.edu/~cbell - HOCKEY-L is for discussion of college ice hockey; send information to [log in to unmask], The College Hockey Information List.
