Well, during the HE-WCHA interlocking schedule, travel partners were used
for the last three years.  The first two years, teams played opponents from
the other conference twice each year - some at home, some away.  The last
three years, each opponent from the other conference was played only once
each, with the following WCHA travel partner pairings:
 
Minnesota & Minnesota-Duluth
North Dakota & Wisconsin
MTU & NMU
CC & Denver
 
When the HE teams played out West, they usually played two straight nights
(i.e. at Minnesota and UMD), but occasionally there was an off day.  And
some trips were made over holidays or breaks, allowing a team to spend a
full week out West and play four games.  It seemed to work out okay.  It
could be doable under the current WCHA alignment.
