Awards and some levity from the Princeton men's hockey banquet, held at the Palmer Inn last Saturday night. Friends Award (Contributions to Princeton hockey) - Walter McDonough '84 WTTM Three Star Award - Jonathan Kelley '96 Hobey Baker Trophy (Rookie of the Year) - Jason Given '99 Class of 1941 Award (Championship Spirit) - Barrington Miller '96 Richard Vaughan Cup (Perseverance & Dedication) - Dan Brown '96 William Blackwell Trophy (MVP) - Jonathan Kelley '96, James Konte '96 '96-'97 Captains: Tony Ranaldi '97, JP O'Connor '97, Mike Bois '97 Class of '96: Dan Brown, Brent Flahr, Jonathan Kelley, James Konte, Barrington Miller & Jason Smith. Kelley finished his career tied w/Patrick Brodeur '86 for 9th in all-time goals, with 49. Konte is 2nd all-time in saves and minutes among goalies. Smith is unofficially first in penalty minutes, with 292. Kelley had a brief tryout with the Providence Bruins and will probably return to their training camp next fall (assuming an NHL team doesn't invite him). Konte is looking to turn pro. Smith will attend Calgary training camp in the fall. Flahr, Miller and Brown do not expect to continue their playing careers and are looking for opportunities in the business world. Among recent Princeton alumni at the banquet were Miro Pasic '94 (an analyst at Morgan Stanley), Dave Scowby '95 (civil engineer at a trans- portation consulting firm in Princeton), Ian Sharp '95 (still coming back from knee injury suffered in '95 ECAC tourney and hoping to continue his hockey career), Greg Polaski '90 (sales rep for an international shipping company) and Troy Ewanchyna '94 (same employer as Scowby). Highlight of the evening: JP O'Connor, co-judge of team's kangaroo court, reads Jonathan Kelley's all-time top 10 fines. I can't remember them all, nor can I recreate JP's well-thought out descriptions, but here are a few: --losing his aunt's car for two hours in a Beverly Hills parking garage during the Great Western Freezeout trip in '92 --when ice trouble at Baker forced the team to hold its first practice of the 92-93 season at a local rink, freshman Kelly forgets to bring his skates --believing Craig Fiander '93 when told that the Princeton room lottery requires students to go to the room of their choice, turn out the lights and brawl for the rights to the room. --Coach Cahoon asks "How are classes going today?" and Kelley responds, "Great. I just dropped one." --Spearing Tom Cullen at St. Lawrence on national TV this season and claiming it was a bad call. --Breaking his stick, carrying it to the bench and then claiming that he didn't know it was a penalty because of "the U.S. high school hockey system." --Following the Dexter Classic tournament victory over Maine as a junior, Kelley celebrates by chugging a Pepsi and then hyperventilating on the floor outside of the lockerroom. For the first time in his four years, however, Kelley was NOT the most fined player on the team -- probably because he was a judge.
