Given the number of Hockey-Lers in attendance, I assumed that someone would have posted these by now. From memory: Booster(s) of the Year: Wally and Mickey Grant Academic Athlete: JR Jason Botterill (second consecutive) Sportsmanship: SR Kevin Hilton (second consecutive) Most Colorful Rookie: FR Bobby Hayes Most Improved Player: JR Chris Frescoln Outstanding Defenseman: SR Steven Halko (third consecutive) Scoring Leader: JR Brendan Morrison (second consecutive) Most Valuable Player: JR Brendan Morrison 1996-97 Captain: SR Brendan Morrison 1996-97 Alternates: SR Jason Botterill and SR Blake Sloan A couple of short but very enjoyable video presentations of the 1995-96 season were shown. Of course, each showing of Morrison's NCAA winning goal received a thunderous ovation, but I think it may have been even louder for highlights of Mike Legg's quarterfinal goal versus Minnesota. And, many fans got to see the UM hit of the season for the first time. Prior to Cincinnati, I'd vote for Bill Muckalt's pasting of Anson Carter in the GLI as the Michigan "HotY", but the winner has to be Harold Schock's tackle of equipment man Ian Hume during the on-ice victory celebration. You can get a glimpse of it if you taped the game on ESPN. The four seniors (John Arnold, Kevin Hilton, Mark Sakala and Steven Halko) each made an impressive speech. Highlights for me (in chronological order): 1. John Arnold's emotional discussion of being a "Michigan Man". 2. The outpouring of emotion from Kevin Hilton when discussing the deaths of his father (after Kevin had committed to Michigan but before he began his freshman year) and Steven Halko's father (the opening week of the 1994-95 season). 3. Mark Sakala remembering back to his first youth hockey experience when he didn't make any of the travel teams. His father couldn't bare to tell him, so he formed a new team with Mark and all of the other kids that didn't make it. The team only scored one goal all season (by Mark), but the kids got to play and improve. 4. Steven Halko being as articulate at the podium as he is stingy on the ice. It's sometimes hard to pry a word from the Engineering turned Math major, but he hopped up to the mike and rattled away like it was second nature. Fyi...Brendan Morrison continues to speak of the title defense. Sorry non-Michigan fans, but Mo' will be back in 1996-97...
